RFTS's Founder, Latoya Alston, Becomes the Director of Prevention and Education for Daughters of Worth!

It is with great joy that we announce Latoya Alston has been named as our new Director of GLAM Girl Empowerment! Our team is beyond thrilled to partner with Latoya and her organization, Rising from the Shadows, to serve and empower girls in all of our participating schools!

Latoya is a graduate of East Carolina University. She obtained a Bachelor of Science in Political Science, Bachelor of Arts in Sociology, and Master of Arts in Sociology from ECU. She went on to obtain a Master of Arts in Human Services Counseling - Marriage and Family from Liberty University. Education has been one of the most important, and fundamental tools that she has obtained in life. She often says that, “education is the one thing that cannot be taken away from you.” Starting off with college with the intentions of going to law school, Latoya changed her mind as she quickly fell in love with sociology and the ability to learn how government, economics, education, family, and religion impacts who we are.

Alston has always had a passion for people, so it is no surprise that her career paths have included being a Lead Tutor, Sociology Instructor, Income Maintenance Worker, Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking

Victim’s Advocate, and ECU Academic Advisor and Teaching Instructor (her current role). She is the Founder of Rising from the Shadows, LLC - a wellness brand that is dedicated to self-love, self-help, and self-awareness. Her life’s mission is to make an impact in the field of domestic violence so that prevention is readily talked about, and abuse is acceptingly, and readily reported.

Latoya is a survivor of domestic violence and is passionate about helping men and women find their voice. She understands the importance of providing a safe space that can facilitate the healing of the whole person - spirit, mind, and body. Even more so, she recognizes that the prevention of abuse and trafficking starts with our children. Over the next few years, she will be working on implementing her work in school systems, churches, and other groups so that our children are able to gain the tools necessary to avoid abuse/trafficking, but also so that they will know how to get out of the situations should they find themselves there.

Latoya is now stepping into the role of Director of Prevention and Education for Daughters of Worth, where she will be training facilitators to teach her workbook, The Survival Workbook for Tweens and Teens in Pitt, Beaufort, and Martin County Schools. The workbook will not only teach children/teens how to avoid abuse, but how to strengthen their mental wellness, understand boundaries and friendships, gain self-esteem, and avoid negative peer pressure. She is overwhelmed with joy and expectation as she enters this new phase of life.
